Criminal Investigation Day: Stephen Lawrence

Our Criminal Investigation Days are for you if you have an inquisitive mind and are considering studying a degree in criminology, law or psychology.

This event will provide students with a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of the Stephen Lawrence case, using it as a lens to examine key legal, societal and institutional issues. By engaging with this landmark case, students will gain critical insights into the intersections of law, justice and race, while also experiencing our institution’s expertise in legal systems.

We will:

  • Examine the facts of the Stephen Lawrence case and the initial police investigation to understand key legal and institutional failings.
  • Explore the findings and significance of the Macpherson Report, with a focus on institutional racism and its impact on policing and the justice system.
  • Engage in interactive workshops to analyse evidence, apply legal reasoning, and consider real-world decision-making in policing and law.
  • Explain major legal developments arising from the case, including changes to double jeopardy laws and discrimination protections.

Dates

  • Virtual: Tuesday 21 April 2026, 16:00-17:30

What can I do to prepare?

This session will be delivered so that no prior knowledge of Law, Policing or Criminology (or even the Stephen Lawrence case) will be required.

Eloise Peabody-Rolf (former LLB student who is now training to be a solicitor on the LPC) has written an interesting essay on the Stephen Lawrence case. This is a helpful starting point but also is a good example of how to write an essay during your A-Levels or at University. A link to it can be found here.
