Lesbian Visibility Week

Lesbian Visibility Week was founded by DIVA, a charitable trust supporting LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people to be heard and valued. The week-long campaign aims to highlight achievements by members of the lesbian community and the challenges which they face. The emphasis on visibility is to provide role models to challenge stereotypes and assumptions. Visibility and representation within communities is a first step towards inclusion and belonging.

This year’s theme is ‘health and wellbeing’, highlighting the inequalities in accessing healthcare such as fertility support, sexual health care, and other health interventions. The events page on the official LVW site offers a range of activities, from increasing learning and awareness to celebratory events and developmental opportunities, to help everyone take part in this week.

What this week means to me:

To me, Lesbian Awareness Week is a dedicated time to finding and celebrating my community. I was 11 years old when I first realised my sexuality, and it was isolating at times- I'd never heard of other lesbians and I had no idea there was such a large community, I truly felt as though I was the only person in the world. When I discovered the LGBTQIA+ community, it changed my life for the better. It made me more comfortable and confident with who I am, it gave me a sense of community and power that I didn't think would ever belong to me. Being aware of lesbians gave words to my feelings and experiences, it allowed me to connect with others and made the world feel so much larger and safer than it ever had before.

I know that visibility and representation can save and improve the quality of lives. Lesbian Awareness Week provides an opportunity to showcase our community and allow others the opportunity to either find themselves or show allyship through support and learning. I gained an education so I could be the representation I needed when I was younger, and being a part of this week is healing in so many ways. Lesbians have always shown their love and support both within the community and outside of it, dedicating our lives to being a safe and welcoming space that people can always find comfort in. I'm very proud to be a part of this space.

2025/2026 calendar

Our EDI calendar can help create an inclusive work and study environment, it can also inspire students, staff and visitors to take part in key celebrations and/or remembrance events.

The calendar highlights faith days observed or celebrated, key diversity days, awareness raising dates and public holidays.

It also focuses on the six main religions as identified in the Census of England and Wales; Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism, All other religions and beliefs not included on the calendar are equally as valued and considered across our work.
